ANIMAL CARE / CONTROL |
| If you have a problem with stray dogs or cats (by "stray" I mean an animal that has no owner to your knowledge). You can call the people who are in charge of "animal control" in our area. The # is 487-2581. You will probably get a recording, but leave a message, they will usually return your call. They live in Winfield and also cover Marion County area, so they are not in the Haleyville area on a daily basis. The animals that they pick up are usually euthanized. The local Humane Society does not deal with the removal of stray animals. They are strictly a volunteer organization. Their concern is finding homes for strays you have taken in and helping with the cost of spaying and neutering once someone has adopted them. They will also help with the cost of feeding these animals if you are willing to keep them until a home is found. The local Humane Society does not pick up stray animals. That is the job of Animal Control at the # I listed above. That is what they get paid to do. If you have taken in a stray and would like to see it find a home as opposed to being euthanized, you can contact the local Humane Society at 486-9126 and leave a message. They will run an ad for free in the local newspaper or check their list of people looking for a pet to adopt. The volunteers of our local Humane Society go unpaid and spend many hours daily, trying to find homes and remedy problems for people who have taken in stray animals. I, for one, am very grateful for these services. These volunteers get very little credit or compliments for the work they do. Their concern for animals is the only thing that gives them the incentive to continue their efforts. If you appreciate that we have citizens in our area willing to take on this task, you need to let them know. Your compassion and their efforts are all these poor animals have. |
