Immigration bill would restrict drivers license tests to English only
NewsA state senator said Monday he will sponsor a package of immigration reform bills, including one that would void the state Supreme Court's ruling that the state isn't restricted from offering driver's license tests in other languages.

Sen. Scott Beason, R-Gardendale, said his legislation would require the state Department of Public Safety's Drivers License Bureau to give the test only in English.

The Alabama Supreme Court had ruled in a 5-4 decision on Oct. 19 that even though the state constitution makes English the state's official language, it does not restrict offering driver's license tests in other languages.

A group called ProEnglish had sued Gov. Bob Riley and the Department of Public Safety, claiming that giving the test in any other language than English violated Amendment 509 of the Alabama Constitution. Alabama voters overwhelmingly ratified the amendment making English the state's official language in 1990.

But the high court said there was no statutory authority accompanying the amendment. Beason said his bill would cure that defect.
